Wales
I
was born in Franklin, Tennessee but some of my, ahem, forebears
were Welsh. In 2000,
I had the chance to spend two weeks there, while attending the
annual conference of the Society of American Travel Writers. That's
me -- always mixing work and pleasure. This is a fascinating country,
and lots of the people are almost as short as I am. Love that!
My favorite memories: listening to Welsh choirs, eating a pasty
in the shadow of Cardiff Castle, touring the living museum, wandering
the ruins of Tintern Abbey, and rummaging around the many bookshops
of Hay-on-Wye.

Can you
see me there on the window sill of the bakery? I am posing
with a freshly baked bear cookie that is almost as big as
I am ! This working bakery is part of the living museum of
Wales, near Cardiff. You can walk through history there!

Here's more of the museum --
the general store, stocked
with products one would find
a hundred years ago in Wales. The nice young lady pretended
to put me on the scales and sell me by the pound !

Oh, did I have a crush on her. The funniest, smartest, nicest
and most knowledgable guide
I have ever had on any trip.
I loved to listen to hear speak Welsh...everyone in the country
seems to have a beautiful voice. Not just that sweet little
Charlotte Church !
